The Story Behind the Scent

I arrived in Chengdu in mid-September, just as rows of osmanthus trees were beginning to bloom. A friend picked a tiny golden flower for me; its sweetness filled the air and stayed in my memory. That evening brought a very different sensation: Sichuan pepper, so pungent it made the tongue tingle. Those contrasting impressions became the idea behind the fragrance. Sichuan pepper brings a spicy contrast to the soft, ripe-peach sweetness of osmanthus. Osmanthus in Chengdu is the meeting of a small flower and a city with a distinct character.
